Yesterday (February 17) Michael “Air” Jordan celebrated his 59th birthday (Happy Physical, Mike!), and while that was a day when he should be getting all the gifts, the G.O.A.T was actually in a giving mood and blessed the good people of North Carolina with the best present anyone can ask for: healthcare.
The Hill is reporting that the NBA Hall of Famer/icon/legend/myth/urban legend dug into the tiny fifth pocket of his baggy jeans and pulled out $10 million and put it towards opening up two new medical clinics in New Hanover County, NC with the help of Novant Health. The move comes a few years after the billionaire teamed up with the same healthcare provider to open up two medical clinics in Charlotte, NC as well.
Novant Health said the new donation will also help the provider “bring this same integrated care model to more rural and rural-adjacent communities in his hometown, offering much-needed services to those who are uninsured or underinsured.”
In a statement, Jordan said he is “very proud to once again partner with Novant Health to expand the Family Clinic model to bring better access to critical medical services in my hometown.”
This is just amazing.
The new clinics couldn’t have come at a better time as COVID-19 continues to run rampant through the U.S. with underserved communities bearing the brunt of the historic pandemic.
“This pandemic has exacerbated health equity gaps across our state, making our efforts to close them even more emergent,” Carl Armato, president and CEO of Novant Health said in a statement. “We look forward to standing these clinics up as quickly as possible to ensure all members of the community have access to necessary medical care.”
Yeah, we still wanna be like Mike when we grow up.
Now, if only he didn’t make his Jordan retro sneakers so damn hard to cop!
