Lee Daniels Working On A Reboot To “The Wonder Years” With An All-Black Cast

All these decades later we think it’s pretty safe to say that many 80’s babies have very fond memories of Kevin Arnold’s tumultuous love affair with Winnie Cooper in the classic coming of age television series, The Wonder Years.

Though we’re sure mellinnials never heard of Kevin Arnold, Winnie Cooper or the classic theme song “With A Little Help From My Friends,” this generation will be able to experience something close to the original as Lee Daniels and Wonder Years star Fred Savage (Kevin Arnold) are working on a reboot to the series with a Black cast!

Finally!

Yahoo is reporting that the new iteration of The Wonder Years will be following the theme of it’s predecessor and will take place in the 60’s era of the Civil Rights movement. Something that Wonder Years heartthrob, Danica McKellar (Winnie Cooper) feels they didn’t explore in the original series.

“One of the things that we did not deal with on The Wonder Years so much is the idea of race and what it was like to be Black in America in the 1960s,” McKellar says. “And now they’re going to have an opportunity to handle this straight on, head on. So I’m very much looking forward to seeing what they create. Fred’s very talented as a director. Lee Daniels, obviously, [is] super talented. I’m sure they’re gonna create an amazing cast and amazing story. Both honoring our show as it was originally, and also doing justice to the struggles of Black America in the 1960s.”

We cannot wait for this at all.

If there were ever a time to revisit an important era of Black history in America, it’s now.

The original series featured actual footage of 60’s era news and events so if Lee Daniels follows the OG formula the reboot should serve as a history lesson to viewers who aren’t familiar with the struggles of Black Americans in an decade of known for hippies, Black Panthers, politically driven assassinations, and the Vietnam war.

Now word yet on who will be cast to star in the series or whether or not it’ll feature the classic Joe Crocker theme song, but best believe will be waiting for that debut episode whenever it drops.
