Catherine Zeta-Jones cast as Colombian drug queen in ‘The Godmother’

zetaIn the 1970s and 80s, Colombian drug queen Griselda Blanco was a terror in the cocaine drug game. Her story was exquisitely told in the documentaries Cocaine Cowboys and Cocaine Cowboys 2. Now a feature film is being made about her life and Catherine Zeta-Jones has been cast in the lead role.

The film, The Godmother, is being helmed by Norwegian director Eva Sorhuag and follows the rise and fall of the only woman to make it to the upper echelons of the Medellin drug cartel. Zeta-Jones, who is Welsh, is no stranger to playing Latina characters. Her breakout performance in The Mask of Zorro, Zeta-Jones played Elena Montero.
