Zendaya and Aaliyah

Lifetime television announced this week that they have cast Zendaya Coleman, 17, to play as Aaliyah in an upcoming TV movie about the singer who died in a plane crash at age 22. The movie, Aaliyah: Princess Of R&B (working title) is based on the book, Aaliyah: More Than A Woman by former Time magazine music editor Christopher Farley. Production is set to begin this summer with the movie airing on Lifetime this fall.

The movie will cover Aaliyah’s short career, including her turn on Star Search at age 10 up until her death on Aug. 8, 2001, where she died with eight other in a plane crash in the Bahamas. She was coming back from filming her video for “Rock the Boat.” In addition, Zendaya will record four Aaliyah tracks for the movie.

But who is Zendaya you ask? She’s a teenage singer, dancer, and actress who stars on the Disney show, Shake It Up! Check out a quick bio on her when she was featured on Dancing with the Stars, along with her debut single, “Replay.”
