Fox picking up hip-hop drama pilot from Lee Daniels

lee-danielsSome of us remember the silliness that was Platinum, a hip-hop drama that aired on UPN back in 2003 that tried to make the music industry look like The Sopranos. It was kinda corny and only lasted six episodes. But it looks like Fox is going to give hip-hop drama another shot.

According to Deadline, Lee Daniels, director of Lee Daniels’ The Butler, and writing partner Danny Strong have written a pilot for a show called Empire, a family drama set in the world of hip-hop. The show will also be produced by Brian Grazer, and avid hip-hop fan and the man behind such films 8 Mile, Undercover Brother and Friday Night Lights.
