We’ve been talking about since this past fall and Saturday Night Live has finally added a Black woman to its cast. According to a number of reports, Sasheer Zamata will make her debut on Jan. 18, alongside Drake who will be hosting that week.
For those unfamiliar, Zamata paid her dues in the Upright Citizens Brigade and is a stand-up comedian and comedy performer. She’s been featured in skits on FX’s Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell and Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer.
It’s been five years since Saturday Night Live had a Black woman in cast (Maya Rudolph was the last one), so when the show introduced its new mostly white male cast members this past fall, everyone started talking. It’s been a glaring omission for years, how could they not see it? But thanks to the chatter, creator Lorne Michaels hosted auditions specifically for Black women and Zamata came out on top. There’s also a possibility that a second Black woman may be added next season. Check out her reel:
